Eastern eggs

11/04/2010

I am sure all of you are still enjoying the chocolate eastern eggs you received at home, at work, at school,…
I certainly am! As I am writing down this text, I am enjoying a small chocolate egg with marzipan filling. And it tastes great!
At work, I presented a nice basket full of chocolate eggs to wish my team members a Happy Eastern and I also treated the rest of our 1st floor. I did not want anybody to have indigestion 
But, every time when I see eastern eggs, I also think about the eastern eggs that are hidden in some software programs of Microsoft. Do you know them?
I added some of them so that you can try it out (if you have the correct version). Some are really amazing. ENJOY!

Word (Microsoft) Easter Eggs
typing exercise:
1. Open a new word document
2. Type "=rand(200,99)" (without the quotes)
3. Press enter
4. Wait a few second and see
5. try typing after "=rand" any variation from (1,1) to (200,99)to see different results; the first number being the repetition and second the number of times in a row...

Word (Microsoft) Easter Egg - Space Invaders
(Note: this game only works on Microsoft Word 99. If you don't have it, it is avaliable for download on the internet. Also, this may work on later versions of Word. I'm not sure.)
You will notice this egg is similar to the Microsoft Word 97 Pinball game. The developers at microsoft made this game EXTRA HARD to access. Expect to make a few mistakes when trying to get into it. To get this to work, you need to do EXACTLY what is said below...
1. First, open a new word document and type: "/dos:cur44="
(without the quotation marks)
2. Next, highlight the words you typed, and go to format > font
3. set the font to bold, and colour red
4. click ok
5. hit enter 3 times
6. insert the symbol (from symbol menu, under normal text): "±"
7. now go to Help, then About Microsoft Word
8. hold "shift, control, M"
9. while holding, click on the product licence key box.
A window should appear (similar to an error window) with the heading: "Word Invaders", with a note below the heading saying: "/dos:cur44="
you will notice that this is what you typed earlier.
10. the window does not have any OK button, so instead type "play" on the keyboard
you should now be playing the game "Word Invaders"!! Have fun!!!

Word (Microsoft) Easter Egg - Pinball in Word 97
1. Open a new document
2. Type "Blue"
3. Select word
4. Go to Format -> Font
5. Choose Font Style Bold, Color Blue
6. Type " " (space) after word "Blue"
7. Go to Help -> About
8. Ctrl-Shift-Left click the Word icon/banner
9. Use Z for left flipper, M for right flipper, and ESC to exit
10. Discover what Microsoft means by "Productivity Application"

Excel 2000 (Excel 9)
I can't get this to work, but others claim that it works for them:
1. Open a new Excel workbook
2. Press F5
3. Type X2000:L2000 and press Enter
4. You should now be on row 2000
5. Press Tab once, to move to column M
6. Hold Control and Shift, then right-click the Chart Wizard icon on the Standard toolbar. Some people have reported that it works only if you left-click the Chart Wizard icon.
7. Watch the list of developers for Excel scroll by.

Microsoft Office 2000 Web Components
Now this one is very cool! Technically, it's the easter egg for the Microsoft Web Components, but you access it from an Excel workbook saved as an interactive web page. Requires Excel 2000, the Microsoft Web components, and DirectX.
1. Open a new Excel workbook.
2. Select File * Save as Web Page
3. In the Save As dialog, select 'Publish Sheet' and 'Add Interactivity'
4. Save to an htm file on your hard drive (any file name).
5. Open the htm file with Internet Explorer 5.
6. Select cell WC2000 and scroll the sheet such that cell WC2000 is the first cell on the left. Highlight the entire row.
7. Press Shift+Crtl+Alt and click the Office logo in the upper-left.
Your screen will be transformed into an auto racing game, with developer credits (and other things) visible on the roadway. Use the following keys:
• Arrow keys: to steer and accelerate
• Space bar: To fire at other cars
• O: To drop an oil slicks
• H: To turn on your headlights

Excel 97 (Excel 8)
Excel's 97's easter egg is the most impressive that I've ever seen. Follow these steps:
1. Open a new workbook
2. Press F5
3. Enter X97:L97 and press Enter
4. Press Tab
5. Press Ctrl+Shift and click the Chart Wizard button on the toolbar.
You'll be greeted with a full-screen animated image. Use the mouse to move around.
Trigger the egg. You'll be looking at a purple 3D landscape. Use the mouse to "fly" over the landscape (the mouse changes direction, left button moves forward and left button moves backwards). Fly around a bit and you'll see a grey stone pyramid. Fly to the side of the pyramid that's black and you'll see the credits scroll by.
NOTE: If this doesn't work, select the Tools Options command, then click the Transition tab. Remove the checkmark from Transition navigation keys and click OK. Then try it again.

Excel 95 (Excel 7)
Excel's 95's easter egg is quite impressive. To get to it, follow these steps:
1. Open a new workbook
2. Scroll down and select row 95
3. Press Tab
4. Choose the Help / About Microsoft Excel command
5. Press Ctrl+Shift and click the Tech Support button
You'll be greeted with a new non-Excel window (fans of Doom will feel right at home). Explore the window using the arrow keys and a few other keys.
NOTE: If you haven't seen the photos, you haven't explored the entire window! Hint: type excelkfa.

Excel 5
To see the Excel 5 easter egg, follow these steps:
1. Choose the View / Toolbars command
2. Click the Customize button
3. Scroll down the Categories list and choose the Custom category
4. Drag the second button (with a deck of cards image) to any visible toolbar
5. Click Cancel if you are asked for a macro
6. Click Close to close the Customize dialog
7. Press Ctrl+Shift+Alt, and then click the new toolbar button.
Don't give up too soon. It gets better. Press Escape when you've seen enough.
